Why Oral Health Still Maters
When Anticay® was first developed during the 1960s, researchers were working on one of the world’s most common oral health problems: dental caries.
More than sixty years later, tooth decay continues to affect billions of people worldwide and remains one of the most common oral health conditions experienced throughout life.
At the same time, modern lifestyles have introduced new challenges for tooth enamel. Frequent exposure to acidic foods and beverages, including soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juices, has contributed to growing concern about dental erosion and enamel wear.
Dental erosion is increasingly recognised in oral health research. Studies report substantial levels of erosive tooth wear in both children and adults, although prevalence varies widely depending on the population studied and the diagnostic method used.
While dentistry has advanced dramatically, one principle remains central:

This principle formed the foundation of the original Anticay® research programme and remains relevant today.
Understanding Enamel
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body.
Yet every day it is exposed to acids produced by oral bacteria and acids from food and drink.
When the oral environment becomes too acidic, minerals can dissolve from the enamel surface. This process is known as demineralisation.
Repeated episodes of mineral loss can weaken enamel and increase susceptibility to erosive wear and dental caries.
The Importance of Saliva
Although enamel is extremely hard, it is not living tissue and cannot repair itself in the same way as skin or bone.
Instead, enamel relies on the oral environment, including saliva, to provide calcium and phosphate ions that help maintain the mineral balance of the tooth surface.
This natural process is known as remineralisation.
Every day, saliva bathes the teeth, helps neutralise acids and supplies minerals that support the enamel surface.
When saliva flow is reduced or the oral environment is repeatedly exposed to acid, teeth can become more vulnerable to mineral loss.
For decades, researchers have investigated ways to support this natural mineral balance by increasing the availability of calcium and phosphate ions in the mouth.
The original ANTICAY® research programme was built around supporting this natural mineral balance through the availability of calcium and phosphate ions.
Why Calcium and Phosphate Matter
Healthy enamel depends on maintaining a balance between mineral loss and mineral replacement.
Calcium and phosphate are major mineral components of tooth enamel, so their availability within the oral environment is central to maintaining this balance.
Calcium sucrose phosphate technologies were developed to provide calcium and phosphate in a soluble, readily available form.
This principle underpinned the original ANTICAY® research programme and remains central to the development of New ANTICAY® today.
NEW ANTICAY® Technology
New ANTICAY® is Biodental Industries’ new generation of calcium sucrose phosphate technology, building on decades of scientific, manufacturing and commercial development associated with the historical ANTICAY® programme.
Biodental Industries has developed new proprietary manufacturing know-how intended to improve the flexibility and commercial potential of the technology while preserving its underlying mineral-delivery principles.
Current work is focused on practical product development and further evaluation of the platform for oral-care and other potential applications.
A New Generation of ANTICAY®
Historical ANTICAY® progressed through extensive scientific investigation, commercial manufacture and market use.
New ANTICAY® builds on that foundation through proprietary redevelopment of the technology and a broader application programme.

Research Philosophy
Development is guided by three principles:
- build on established scientific evidence;
- use practical analytical and pilot-scale work to answer specific development questions; and
- disclose proprietary manufacturing information only where it is necessary for serious technical or commercial evaluation.
The objective is to develop a robust, scalable technology platform supported by evidence rather than promotional claims.

FROM ESTABLISHED SCIENCE TO INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Historical ANTICAY® Programme
In the 1960s, researchers at the University of Melbourne and CSR Limited developed calcium sucrose phosphate technology that became known as ANTICAY®.
The technology progressed through laboratory, animal and human research and was investigated for applications in oral care and food products. Commercial formulations followed, supported by manufacturing development in Australia.
The programme also attracted significant international scientific and commercial interest. Development activity extended into the United States and other markets, together with regulatory, safety and application work supporting broader use of the technology.
This work generated a substantial body of scientific, toxicological, manufacturing, food and oral-health evidence that remains relevant to understanding the ANTICAY® platform today.
The historical programme established more than a product. It created a scientific and industrial foundation from which later development could continue
The Origins of Anticay®
ANTICAY® was developed by researchers at the University of Melbourne and CSR Limited, formerly the Colonial Sugar Refining Company.
Although best known for sugar, CSR was also a major Australian industrial and chemical manufacturer with substantial research capability.
Recognising the burden of dental caries, CSR scientists investigated calcium and phosphate chemistry and its potential role in supporting enamel health.
That work led to the development of ANTICAY®.
During the 1960s and early 1970s, ANTICAY® was incorporated into a range of foods, confectionery products, chewing gums and oral-care products.
Research programmes expanded, clinical studies were conducted, manufacturing capability increased and international interest followed.
A Technology with Enduring Relevance
Long before “remineralisation” became familiar in consumer oral care, researchers were investigating the importance of calcium and phosphate ions in maintaining enamel mineral balance.
The scientific principles that underpinned ANTICAY® in the 1960s remain relevant to contemporary mineral-delivery and oral-care research.
International Development and Continuing Relevance
During the 1970s, the original Australian commercial programme reduced in scale as CSR changed its corporate direction.
The scientific and commercial interest in calcium sucrose phosphate technology continued internationally.
Development activity extended into the United States and other markets, supported by regulatory, safety, food and oral-health work. The historical programme generated a substantial body of scientific, toxicological, manufacturing and application evidence that remains relevant to understanding ANTICAY® today.
Research into enamel mineral balance, remineralisation and the role of calcium and phosphate in oral health has continued internationally.
ANTICAY® therefore did not simply disappear. Its scientific foundation remained relevant and provided a basis for later redevelopment.
