THE CHALLENGE
Why Oral Health Still Maters
When Anticay® was first developed during the 1960s, researchers were working on one of the world’s most common oral health problems: dental caries.
More than sixty years later, tooth decay continues to affect billions of people worldwide and remains one of the most common oral health conditions experienced throughout life.
At the same time, modern lifestyles have introduced new challenges for tooth enamel. Frequent exposure to acidic foods and beverages, including soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juices, has contributed to growing concern about dental erosion and enamel wear.
Dental erosion is increasingly recognised in oral health research. Studies report substantial levels of erosive tooth wear in both children and adults, although prevalence varies widely depending on the population studied and the diagnostic method used.
While dentistry has advanced dramatically, one principle remains central:
Healthy teeth depend on maintaining the balance between mineral loss and mineral replacement.
This principle formed the foundation of the original Anticay® research programme and remains relevant today.
Understanding Enamel
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body.
Yet every day it is exposed to acids produced by oral bacteria and acids from food and drink.
When the oral environment becomes too acidic, minerals can dissolve from the enamel surface. This process is known as demineralisation.
Repeated episodes of mineral loss can weaken enamel and may increase susceptibility to enamel wear and dental caries.
The Importance of Saliva
Although enamel is extremely hard, it is not living tissue and cannot repair itself in the same way as skin or bone.
Instead, enamel relies on the oral environment, including saliva, to provide calcium and phosphate ions that help maintain the mineral balance of the tooth surface.
This natural process is known as remineralisation.
Every day, saliva bathes the teeth, helps neutralise acids and supplies minerals that support the enamel surface.
When saliva flow is reduced or the oral environment is repeatedly exposed to acid, teeth can become more vulnerable to mineral loss.
For decades, researchers have investigated ways to support this natural mineral balance by increasing the availability of calcium and phosphate ions in the mouth.
The original Anticay® research programme was built around this concept.
Why Calcium and Phosphate Matter
Healthy enamel depends on maintaining the balance between mineral loss and mineral replacement.
Because calcium and phosphate are key mineral components of tooth enamel, their availability within the oral environment plays an important role in enamel health.
Calcium sucrose phosphate technologies have been investigated for their ability to provide calcium and phosphate in a soluble, available form.
For more than six decades, researchers have studied this principle through laboratory studies, animal models, clinical investigations and modern analytical techniques.
NEW ANTICAY® Technology
NEW ANTICAY® Technology is Biodental Industries' next-generation evolution of the clinically studied ANTICAY® calcium sucrose phosphate technology. Building on decades of research, NEW ANTICAY® has been developed to optimise mineral availability for advanced enamel care formulations.
The Next Evolution of Anticay®
For more than five decades, Anticay® technology has been recognised for its clinically studied calcium sucrose phosphate mineral delivery system and its contribution to enamel protection and remineralisation.
NEW ANTICAY® Technology builds upon this foundation through advances in calcium loading and mineral delivery engineering, providing a next-generation platform for modern oral care formulations.
Rather than simply adding minerals to a formulation, NEW ANTICAY® Technology has been developed to maximise the availability of bioavailable calcium and phosphate ions at the tooth surface where they are required.
Technology Platform
NEW ANTICAY® Technology has been developed as a flexible mineral delivery platform suitable for incorporation into a range of oral care products including:
• Toothpaste
• Tooth powder
• Mouth rinses
• Professional dental products
• Future oral care technologies
The technology is also compatible with complementary ingredients including microcrystalline hydroxyapatite and other advanced enamel protection systems.
Research Philosophy
Development has focused on:
• Improved mineral availability
• Enhanced calcium loading
• Optimised phosphate delivery
• Enamel protection
• Daily remineralisation support
The objective has been to improve upon traditional calcium sucrose phosphate technology while maintaining the proven strengths of the original Anticay® platform.

Development Status and Collaboration Opportunity.
New Anticay® is a proprietary material platform being developed by Biodental Industries as a contemporary evolution of the original Anticay® calcium sucrose phosphate technology.
While the original Anticay technology is supported by a substantial body of historical scientific research, New Anticay represents a separate stage of development involving updated composition, manufacturing and application work undertaken within Biodental Industries.
To preserve intellectual-property options during this early development phase, detailed composition, process and performance information has not yet been broadly disclosed or independently evaluated outside the company. Internal analytical and formulation work has been used to guide development to date.
The next stage is intended to include independent characterisation, application-specific testing and collaborative product development. This creates an opportunity for suitable research and commercial partners to engage with the technology while its validation, formulation and commercial pathways are still being defined.
Technical and Commercial Enquiries
Biodental Industries welcomes enquiries from organisations interested in independent evaluation, formulation development, research collaboration or potential commercial applications of New Anticay®.

STORY TWO
THE FORGOTTEN TECHNOLOGY
The Technology That Nearly Disappeared
In the 1960s, researchers at Melbourne University and CSR Limited developed a calcium sucrose phosphates technology called Anticay®.
Anticay® became the subject of laboratory, animal and human research. It was used in food and oral care applications, incorporated into commercial formulations and attracted international interest.
A dedicated manufacturing facility was established in Sydney to support anticipated commercial demand.
The technology appeared poised for growth.
Then commercial development stopped.
Not because the science had failed.
Not because the research had ended.
But because the company that created it chose a different path.
The Origins of Anticay®
Anticay® was developed by researchers at Melbourne University and CSR Limited, formerly the Colonial Sugar Refining Company.
While best known for sugar, CSR was also a major Australian industrial and chemical manufacturer with significant research capability.
Recognising the burden of dental caries, CSR scientists investigated calcium and phosphate chemistry and its potential role in supporting enamel health.
Their work led to the development of Anticay®.
During the 1960s and early 1970s, Anticay® was incorporated into a variety of foods, confectionery products, chewing gums and oral care products.
Research programmes expanded.
Clinical studies were conducted.
Manufacturing capacity increased.
International interest followed.
A Technology Ahead of Its Time
Long before terms such as “remineralisation” became familiar to consumers, researchers were already investigating the importance of calcium and phosphate ions in maintaining enamel health.
The scientific principles that inspired Anticay® during the 1960s remain relevant to many contemporary oral care technologies.
Today, related systems may be described using terms such as:
- calcium sucrose phosphate
- CaSP
- calcium sucrose phosphate / inorganic calcium phosphate complexes
- calcium-phosphate remineralisation technologies
Although the terminology has evolved, the scientific foundations remain closely related.
The Science Survived
During the 1970s, CSR elected to exit its chemical business and focus on building products, construction materials and mining interests.
As a result, Anticay® lost the corporate support required for large-scale commercial expansion.
Yet the science survived.
Research into calcium sucrose phosphate technologies continued internationally and remains active today.
Modern investigators continue to study enamel remineralisation, mineral balance and the role of calcium and phosphate ions in oral health.
The story of Anticay® did not end.
It simply entered a new chapter.
